La Rochelle capital of the Department of Charente, is a port facing the French Atalantic approximately equidistant from the point of Brittany and French Basque Country. It is home to an airport which it shares with the island of Ré.

The old town is an ideal spot to stroll past the towers (of Chaîne, Saint Nicolas, in the old port, of the great clock, and of the Lanterne) The Town Hall is in Renaissance style, and the city is home to many museums, among which one finds the aquatic museum, “L’Aquarium”. The second largest leisure port in France, “Les Minimes”, lies to the south of the city.
Among the monumental defences, the tower of Saint Nicholas is outstanding. Forty two metres high, and constructed on oak pillars, these towers, Saint Nicholas and the Cadena guard the entry to the old port.

The climate is temperate oceanic and wet; the surrounding lands are influenced by the temperature of the water surface and the currents, as well as by the winds. The maritime climates are moderate without extreme seasonal variations. Rainfall is conditioned by the coastal meteorology and air temperature by that of the water.
