Lying to the west of Italy, the island of Elba is a paradise of volcanic origin of about 225 square kilometres in the province of Livorno. It is the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago, and is in its entirety, part of the national park, which extends through the provinces of Livorno and Grosseto.
Its coastline is very varied, from coral reefs, much appreciated by divers, to tiny beaches, which contrast with the rugged and mountainous interior. The highest peak is Mount Capanna, at 1.000 m above sea level. The island is divided in 8 administrative communes: Campo nell'Elba, Capoliveri, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro, Rio Marina, Rio nell'Elba and Portoferraio. The last of these is the capital.
The climate is temperate with mild temperatures all year round, with “sweet” springs, long summers, and with autumn and winter having scant rainfall, allowing holidays to be made throughout the entire year.
