Bergen is the second largest city in Norway. It lies in the west of the country, on the southwest coast in a valley formed by a group of seven mountains known as “ de syv fjell” Bergen is the administrative capital of the region known as Eastern Norway, as is also famed as the entry port for the Norwegian fiords, and as such is the biggest port for tourist cruisers in Norway, and among the largest in Europe.
The fiords are Scandinavia’s biggest tourist attraction, and Bergen is the doorway to their kingdom. This has converted Bergen into a vital pathway for those who wish to experience the joys of the extensive Norwegian coastline with its many-faceted Nature. Here the waterfalls plunge down from the mountainsides, whose snow-capped summits shine in the sun. Here the brilliant green meadows rush down to the azure waters of the fiords, and, in the spring, the fruit trees flower like lace blankets across the countryside.
Bergen is renowned for its abundant rains (and indeed is known as City of Rain), which can rise to more than 2250 mm per year on average. Bergen is one of the most temperate cities in the country, thanks to the Gulf Stream, and a temperature of 10ºC accompanied by rain describes a climatic condition that may just as easily occur in summer as in winter.
