Tromsö is the most important city in the far north of Norway, lying on a small island 340 km inside the Arctic Circle. It is Norway’s biggest fishing centre, specialising in herring, and is also the storage port for expeditions to and commerce with the Arctic lands.

Tromso’s centre is the biggest wooden city north of Trondheim, and has a rich architectural heritage in the imperial style of the 1800’s, which blended with buildings from earlier times.

The winter climate in the Arctic Circle is very cold, with meagre light throughout the winter, whereas in summer one can see the midnight sun, and indeed, the Aurora Borealis.
