Stockholm is one of the world’s most beautiful cities, finely spread out over 14 islands between the mouth of the Mäleren Lake and the wonderful archipelago with its more than 24,000 islands, islets, and cays. Stockholm is the largest city in the Nordic region, and claims a cultural and historical greatness beyond any city in Northern Europe. The city is constructed upon fourteen islands, where Lake Mälaren meets the sea, in front of the Stockholm archipelago of more than 24,000 islands.
The centre of the city is in Gamla Stan (The Old Town) and Riddarholmen, two islands that together comprise the biggest and best-preserved mediaeval city centre in Northern Europe, with a history dating from the XIII century. In Gamla Stan one finds the Royal Palace, many beautiful churches, passages, small picturesque streets, alleyways, and a wealth of shops, restaurants cafés and bars.
The Stockholm Archipelago with its 24,000 islands, a unique place to visit all year round, is an ideal spot for sailing. On various islands one can find pretty houses, charming restaurants and rustic shops. On the Archipelago itself there is a lot of variety… from north to south, or east to west, or from the island’s beach to its summit… but always the richness of the sea and the bird life is respected.
Stockholm is best visited in the summer, from mid May until mid August when temperatures are normally high (up to 22ºC) and the days long. The winters are generally long, dark, and harsh, and the countryside is covered in snow and ice. Temperature averages in Stockholm are… January: -3ºC, July: 17ºC. In January there are 6 hours of light, and in July, 18 hours.
