Gothenburg is the second biggest city in Sweden. It is a coastal, maritime city, situated on the banks of the estuary of the river Göta Älv where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. Its history, its atmosphere and character have all been formed by the sea, and the marine history that has grown up around what is the biggest port in Scandinavia.

Gothenburg is the centre of a great coastal archipelago formed by thousands of islands, islets and cays. Its heart is Avenyn, a wide avenue flanked by trees, full of restaurants and cafés, and lively street musicians. With its more than 20 parks it is known as “the Green City”, and is the ideal place to set off in exploration of the western coast of Sweden, the so-called Gold Coast of more than 400 km of waterway such as the Dalsland canal, of which only 10 km is really artificial, but connects a system of 240 Km of navigable waterway through lakes of a stunning beauty and peacefulness.

During the summer a pleasant climate reigns in Sweden, but the weather can change quickly. Summers are generally sunny and mild (from 18° C to 25° C). The days are longer in this season. Autumn begins on the 15th August, and the fall in temperature can be drastic. Winters are harsh, cold and dry. High up in the Arctic Circle, the sun shines permanently from mid May until the end of July, whereas in this same region night lasts two months. The sea temperature swings between 15° C and 17° C during the month of August.
