Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island of Tenerife, and of the province of the same name. The municipality lies in the northeast of the island, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The city is set between the bay of Santa Cruz and the Anaga Plateau, rising up like an amphitheatre from the coast to the heights.
The municipality measures 150,56 km² and its old town is only 4 meters above sea level. It has 58 kilometres of coastline, naturally divided by the Santos Gorge. The city lies on a severe slope and forms a conurbation with San Cristóbal de La Laguna and absorbs other towns such as Taco and la Cuesta. Its many famous beaches include the beach of Las Teresitas, declared a Centre of National Tourist Interest, Benijo Beach, the beach of Las Gaviotas or the César Manrique Maritime Park.
The climate is dry, with low rainfall (little more than 200 mm per year) and mild temperatures (a mean annual temperature of 21ºC), with scant daily swings in temperature thanks to the effect of the trade winds.
